What is Tuscan Architecture?

It's a question that we're often asked, so we thought we would shed a little light, or maybe Tuscan Sun, on the subject for you.

Today Tuscan architecture is a combination of modern elements along with a classic Old World European style reminiscent of an Italian villa. A defining characteristic of Tuscan architecture is the use of natural custom crafted stone such as limestone, travertine and marble. To complement the natural stone, and to give an antique feel, terra cotta flooring and roof tiles are often incorporated into the design along with repurposed wooden beams.

Exterior

The exteriors of Tuscan architecture homes are typically accented with wrought iron gates and front entrances. Natural brick walkways wind through garden areas lined with walls covered with intertwining vines. Lavender, rosemary and sage are often planted around the home in antique style jars and pots that replicate the feel of a true Tuscany garden. You may also find a beautiful fountain as the centerpiece of a courtyard.

Interior

When you enter a Tuscan home, one of the first things you'll notice is the use of fine Italian building material. Elegant marble fireplaces, wrought iron and other elegant touches accent the interior. Plaster walls that feature hand painted wall treatments are very common, along with warm colors and Mediterranean decor in subtle earth tones.

Ceilings

Ceilings can feature rich texture along with stenciled borders or they may be paneled or vaulted to accent the architectural framework. For a more rustic look, wooden or chestnut beams are often incorporated into the design of the ceiling.

Flooring

For flooring, you may find glass, stone and tile used to create a colorful and detailed mosaic. Or, for true Tuscany home decor, terra cotta tiles, marble and ceramic flooring are used. There is also a type of flooring called terrazzo, which is produced by combining and polishing marble chips, stucco and crushed stone. If you're looking for a warm feel, installing hardwood flooring is a good option because it easily complements the natural tones already found in a Tuscan home.

Color

A Tuscan color palette creates a warm and inviting feeling to your home. Warm shades of red, yellow, green and browns are natural earth tones that work well to create the Tuscan look.

Tuscan architecture creates a beautiful home that is warm, inviting and luxurious.
