Palladian Style Architecture

The Palladian style architecture originates from the famous 16th century architect, Andrea Palladio. The modern Palladian architecture is an evolution of Andrea Palladio's work from the 1500's. Palladio's primary values and core concepts were based on symmetry, perspective, and components of Ancient Greek and Roman temple architecture.

This style of architecture was growing momentum in Great Britain in the middle of the 17th century, however, this changed significantly during the civil war that ensued. Popularity continued throughout the 1800's and 1900's in Europe, especially in municipal buildings. There was some impediment in the latter half of the 19th century because of the Gothic revival, however. This was because many architects of that time deemed the Palladian style to be too agnostic for Protestant and Anglo-Catholic worship. Even with some of the setbacks, just like all great architecture, the Palladian style prevailed and is still common in today's world.

All buildings that were designed by Palladio are in Venice and Veneto which include villas and churches. Much of the design is influenced by classical Roman architecture which is based on mathematical proportions rather than the rich ornamental style. An amazing feature of Palladio's designs were the fact that they all were designed in reference to their settings. An example of this would be the use of facades if the building was set on a hill; occupants could have good views in all directions.

The Palladian window, also known as the Serlian or Venetian window, were often a significant feature in Palladio's work, making it a trademark of Palladio's early career. The window consists of a central opening with a semicircular arch over it, which is carried on an impost consisting of a small entablature, under which, are pilasters, which enclose two other openings on each side. The Palladian window has become one of the most instantly recognizable features of Palladian architecture.

There are many iconic buildings in North America that are of Palladian style: Mount Airy in Virginia, Redwood Library in Rhode Island, the Hammond-Harwood House in Maryland, and many more. Palladian style architecture is also very popular in residential homes; many home owners like the distinct features of Palladian architecture.
